Goodbye, IBM China Research Institute!

发布时间:2021-12-31作者来源:金航标浏览:2519

IBM recently closed its once popular Chinese Research Institute, which was founded a quarter of a century ago. The most famous Watson was born here. This is a breakthrough in the cognitive field that IBM values most. Like the popularity of artificial intelligence, Watson has almost become a key strategic pillar of IBM in the future.

But, as it turns out, Watson doesn't work. IBM's Watson plan, even in the medical field widely considered to be the first to achieve a breakthrough in artificial intelligence, has not made convincing progress. China Research Institute has four pillars, including the Internet of things. IBM enthusiastically launched "Internet of things 3.0" in 2014. Now the industrial Internet has become a national strategy, but IBM has gained little in these fields.

I don't know whether it is because the poor performance of these projects has dragged down IBM and led to the closure of the Research Institute, or because of the overall bleak situation of IBM. Yesterday, IBM released its Q4 financial statements for 2020, which triggered a sharp decline in the stock market because it was not as expected. In 2020, IBM's annual revenue was $74 billion, equivalent to the annual revenue of Weichai Power. In 2018, IBM ate "Little Red Riding Hood" at an amazing price of $34 billion, focusing on the hybrid cloud market. But the performance is still not strong enough. Although the growth has also reached 20%, it is still not fast enough. Red hat is not as popular as expected.

The giant IBM is planted in the cloud. Enterprise computing needs and the migration from servers to the cloud are the biggest drivers of IBM's lethargy in the past decade. At that time, IBM spun off the PC to Lenovo, leaving a complacent server market. Who would have thought that more than ten years later, the fat land in those days has now become a hot yam.

Last October, IBM spun off an infrastructure department, Newco (such a casual name, is there no name in the world  [chuckles]  ? (ominous omen) prepare for independent listing. IBM is now breaking its bridges and taking the cloud as the boundary, which is divided into cloud department and non cloud department - the latter is the representative of backward it.

It is worth sighing that the life of Academia Sinica is becoming more and more difficult for both IBM and Ge. These research institutes, which have been incomparably brilliant and brought amazing scientific and technological progress to mankind, have all produced Nobel Prize winning scientists. Now, has it become a burden of today's technology?

In sharp contrast, many Chinese enterprises have begun to do research institutes. Huawei Research Institute may soon become the world's largest enterprise research institute. Behind this is the historical inevitability, or did China choose the wrong way. The reason needs further observation.
